The "self-made" man or woman has become SUCH an ideal it is impossible to overcome. That's why so many of those old as dirt thinkers talked about God "destroying our idols" or "killing the Old Adam." God needs to kill the self-sufficient us, because we won't give him or her up willingly.Nick Lannonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12618434434679868344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8896368258232952265.post-31521843843869644242009-09-23T09:17:21.326-04:002009-09-23T09:17:21.326-04:00Stevie Clifton gave me this great book called &quo...Stevie Clifton gave me this great book called "The Freedom of Morality" about contemporary (and old as dirt) greek theology, and it talks about how it is only when we can completely abandon any idea of self-sufficiency can we then join the body of Christ.
Basically, we are all immobile drooling babies who could never achieve any kind of eternal, love-filled life, and the quicker we recognize and embrace our weakness, the sooner we experience the amazing love of God. But i dare you to go up and explain to someone who is handi-capable how awesome it is that they're weak and how we're all just as weak.Dana Pnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8896368258232952265.post-76503390993982616492009-09-21T18:43:00.724-04:002009-09-21T18:43:00.724-04:00What comes to my mind first is the idea that our i...What comes to my mind first is the idea that our inner view of what we are, and how we rank, is very volatile, as we respond to shifts in context. When the "side that's winning," i.e., the "moral upper hand," is the class of sufferers, well, it's time to wear one's proofs of suffering, hurts, scars, etc. right out in the open. or on Oprah. or whatever.
Sometimes though, it seems more prudent to be seen as invulnerably strong, with strong fences (built single-handedly) to keep out nay-sayers and doubters.
This kind of change-of-context is so compelling to me that it changes my "stance" often before I realize it.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02166693217031477358noreply@blogger.com
